Lee Roy Selmon's history combines the benefits of football family academic scholarship with social service. First family he is the youngest of the nine children of Lucious and Jessie Selmon raised on a farm in Eufala, Oklahoma. Second, football was his favorite sport. He was one of three brothers who played for Oklahoma. The three brothers were all All-America. The year 1973 was the first time Lee Roy and Lucious Jr. Dewey were the players for just one season. Lee Roy won the Outland and Lombardi Awards as the nation's top lineman. Oklahoma was the winner of two National Championships in the span of three seasons as the player of the team. Selmon was granted a 3rd award in 1975. In addition, he was referred to as an National Football Foundation Student-Athlete. Selmon graduated with a degree of Education. Lee Roy spent ten hours each week working as a volunteer throughout his time at college. In Tampa where he played, he joined the Buccaneers over nine years and was an all-pro. Also, he began a career in the field of business. By 1988 he had become an Account Relations Officer for Tampa's First Florida Bank and worked in these organizations: Special Olympics Easter Seals Baptist Church Ronald McDonald House United Negro College Fund South Florida Institute in the Black Life Hall of Fame Bowl Committee. There's no doubt that it was a surprise to hear that he was voted one of the top 10 young men in the country by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1982. Lee Roy stood 6-2 in height and weighed 256 pounds at the time he played in college. He captained the 1975 team. He joined University of South Florida in 1993, as assistant director of sports. He was named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988. He was also named to the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 1994, and then the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995. His parents, Lucious as well as Mary Selmon, Jr. were awarded the Distinguished American Award in 1989 from the Oklahoma City Chapter National Football Foundation. Henry Bellmon was the Oklahoma Governor who presented this award.
